Walter Thompson ha estado componiendo profesionalmente los últimos 30 años, ejecutando como músico y dirigiendo sus composiciones en diferentes paises . Ha compuesto/ dirigido Soundpaintings con orquestas contemporáneas en ciudades de todo el mundo como puedan ser: Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Bergen, y Reykjavik. Ha enseñado Soundpainting en el Conservatorio de Paris, en Eastman School of Music, en la Academia de las Artes de Islandia , en la Universidad de Michigan, en el Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music, y en la Universidad de New York, en otros.

Thompson ha recibido reconocimientos a su obra por parte de varias organizaciones.
